Hand Washing Made Fun

by | Mar 13, 2020

With the coronavirus (COVID-19) bringing uncertainty and fear to the forefront of mainstream media and daily conversation, we thought we could provide some calm with a few tips on handwashing and staying healthy.

Why is Handwashing so Important?

Something as innocent as rubbing your eye can bring a virus in your body, which is why simple precautions should be taken in order to prevent infection. The CDC recommends scrubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and warm running water. Still skeptical? Check out their post explaining the science behind their recommendations.

Well, What about Hand Sanitizer?

Hand sanitizer is great for use throughout the day to further prevent the spread of germs, but it has found to be not nearly as effective as handwashing. Hand sanitizer does not kill all types of germs and only neutralizes the bacteria, still leaving it on your hand, allowing it to resurge later. Not to mention you need to apply about 3 mL of sanitizer (more than half a teaspoon) in order to properly coat and disinfect your hands according to the American Council on Science and Health. That is much more than the tiny bit. In fact, Business Insider did their own experiment, and discovered that hand sanitizer isn’t nearly as effective at removing germs as regular hand soap is when tested under a black light.

20 seconds?! That can seem like forever!

Singing Happy Birthday twice as the CDC recommends can be a total bore (Not to mention it feels strange singing yourself Happy Birthday every day when there’s a 1/365 chance it’s actually your birthday…). No worries, people across the globe have been trying to make these 20 seconds as effective and fun as possible amid this pandemic. In fact, many different sites have provided a variety of catchy hits that can make this activity a fun and energizing part of your day. Here are a couple of our favorites:

“Africa” By Toto

Hand washing chorus: “It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you / There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do / I bless the rains down in Africa / Gonna take some time to do the things we never had”

Truth Hurts by Lizzo

Hand washing chorus: “Why men great ’til they gotta be great? / Don’t text me, tell it straight to my face/ Best friend sat me down in the salon chair / Shampoo press, get you out of my hair / Fresh photos with the bomb lighting / New man on the Minnesota Vikings / Truth hurts, needed something more exciting / Bom bom bi dom bi dum bum bay”

Come on Eileen by Dexys Midnight Runners

Hand washing chorus: “Come on Eileen, oh I swear what he means / At this moment, you mean everything / You in that dress, my thoughts I confess / Verge on dirty, ah, come on Eileen”

In My Feelings by Drake

Hand washing chorus: “Kiki, do you love me? Are you riding? / Say you’ll never ever leave from beside me / ‘Cause I want ya, and I need ya / And I’m down for you always / KB, do you love me? Are you riding? / Say you’ll never ever leave from beside me / ‘Cause I want ya, and I need ya / And I’m down for you always”

Love on Top by Beyoncé

Hand washing chorus: “Baby it’s you / You’re the one I love / You’re the one I need / You’re the only one I see / Come on baby it’s you / You’re the one that gives your all / You’re the one I can always call / When I need to make everything stop / Finally you put my love on top”

“This Land is Your Land” by Woody Guthrie

Hand washing chorus: “This land is your land, this land is my land / From the California to the New York island / From the Redwood Forest, to the gulf stream waters / This land was made for you and me”

“Landslide,” by Fleetwood Mac

Hand washing chorus: “Well, I’ve been afraid of changin’ / ‘Cause I’ve built my life around you / But time makes you bolder / Even children get older / And I’m gettin’ older too”

Don’t see your favorite song on our list?

A man on Twitter named William Gibson has created a handwashing graphic generator, breaking down almost any popular song into 20-second segments by pairing Genius’s lyric database with Britain’s National Health Service’s instructional poster.

Lastly, Don’t Forget to Dry Those Hands!

Wet hands are the perfect place for germs to cling to, and the degree of wetness greatly impacts bacterial transfer and spread to items touched. Please ensure your hands are fully dry using a paper towel or hand dryer.
